Trans-Jordan Cities, Granger Energy, and Murray City partner together to bring Green Power to the Citizens of Murray City
Trans-Jordan Cities, Granger Energy, and Murray City have come together in a joint project to create a sustainable energy source for the south Salt Lake valley. This project is a way for these three entities to take a known greenhouse gas (methane) and use it to produce energy in the form of electricity. This electrical power has been purchased by Murray City and will provide energy for over 3,000 homes.
This project will be a benefit not only to the citizens of Murray City but also to everyone living in the Salt Lake valley. Using the landfill gas to produce electricity rather than emitting it into the air will reduce green house gases the equivalent of removing 39,200 vehicles from our roads each year!
The landfill gas (LFG) project itself consists of three parts: Wells, gathering system and generation facility. The wells are anywhere from 72’ deep to over 150’ deep and are connected to an HDPE pipe gathering system connecting all of the wells which terminates at the Granger Energy generation building. Granger Energy then dries and compresses and fed into one of three large industrial generators that convert the LFG into electricity. Each of the generators is capable of producing 1.53mw of electricity for a total of 4.6mw. The electricity is then sent through a state of the art substation where it will be transmitted via Rocky Mountain Power’s grid to and on to Murray City homes.
